A Canadian official is urging Democratic New York Mayor Eric Adams to stop transporting illegal immigrants north, the New York Post reported on Monday.
Quebec Prime Minister François Legault’s office says the illegal immigration situation in his region of Canada is already overwhelming, as it was for Adams, according to the NYP. Adams has criticized Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott for months for transporting thousands of illegal immigrants to the Big Apple, prompting him to send some of them over the Canadian border. “Any form of assistance to migrants crossing the border where it is strictly prohibited to do so must stop immediately,” a spokesman for Quebec Prime Minister François Legault was quoted as saying by the NYP. “We understand that the situation for migrants in New York poses great challenges, but the situation in Quebec and particularly Montreal is even worse and constitutes an important humanitarian issue.”

Adams began using city dollars to buy bus tickets so illegal immigrants could get to cities of their choosing in partnership with Catholic Charities, he told FOX 5’s Good Day New York on Feb. 6. taxis and vans to cross the border on foot and surrender to Canadian authorities, according to the NYP.
“If they are looking to go elsewhere, we are helping with the reissue process. What we found (is) that people had other destinations but were compelled to just come to New York City and we are helping and interviewing those looking to go elsewhere. Some want to go to Canada, some want to go to warmer states and we are there for them as they continue to chase that dream,” said Adams on Feb. 6.
Neither Adams’ office nor Legault’s office responded to requests for comment. However, Adams told CNN on Wednesday that the city is not “encouraging” illegal immigrants to go anywhere.
“We are not encouraging anyone to go to another country,” said Adams. “If we talk to a migrant, interview them, (we) find out their desires and make sure we are helping them like we did.”
Abbott, the city of El Paso, Texas, and Colorado Democratic Governor Jared Polis sent buses of illegal immigrants to the Big Apple in efforts to ease the surge at the southern border. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recorded more than 2.3 million encounters with migrants in fiscal 2022.
