The Flash trailer features a lot of Batman, with Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck donning their capes and pointy ears once more – but an easily missed Easter egg tucked into the Big Game TV commercial references another version of the Dark Knight.
Artist Chris Weston, who worked in The Flash’s costume department, took to Twitter to highlight the costume variants that can be seen in the TV commercial (H/T Collider (opens in new tab)). One eagle-eyed fan noticed that some of the costumes are Easter eggs, with two relating to the Adam West version of the Caped Crusader seen in the Batman ’66 TV show and movie.
Fun and nerdy #Batman stuff. L-to-R: Suit with ’66 (Adam West) crest and grappling gun holsters the next in Adams’ classic blue and gray look with the ’89 symbol; suit ’89; suit ’92; a bat diving suit, a desert-style suit. The current suit in the middle. #TheFlash https://t.co/VjzgiM3HAbFebruary 13, 2023
As noted, the first suit on the left is gray and features the 1966 Bat symbol, as does West’s suit. “Batman ’66 symbol… my idea…!” weston wrote in twitter (opens in new tab). “So were the grappling guns in the holsters and the golden age ears on the hood! I was in fanboy heaven! Luckily, I had a great lead designer, Alexandra Byrne, who was very receptive to my crazy notions!”
The next one is also gray, but with a blue hood and cape, matching the original Batman comic book look. Next in line is the ’89 Batman Keaton costume, then the Batman Returns costume. After that, there are two new suits, one with what appears to be a breathing tube rigged for underwater use, while the other has goggles, presumably for desert terrain. At center stage is the costume Keaton will wear on The Flash. We have a photo below with the brightness turned up so you can identify the Easter eggs for yourself.
As detailed in the official synopsis, The Flash sees the titular Scarlet Speedster accidentally break the timeline after traveling back to try and save her mother, which creates a new future where superheroes no longer exist. If that wasn’t bad enough, the Man of Steel’s General Zod shows up while Earth is unprotected. Barry must try to bring Keaton’s Batman out of retirement to help, while another Kryptonian, Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, needs to be released from prison.
If two Batmen weren’t enough, some fans also think they’ve seen Christian Bale’s incarnation of the character in the trailer, although we’ll have to wait and see if he appears in the multiversal adventure.
The Flash hits theaters on June 16. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the upcoming DC movies and TV shows to see what else is coming in the DCU.
